An Unexpected Adventure: Riding Camels in Los Cabos

When you picture a desert adventure in Los Cabos, images of sun-drenched dunes, sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, and ATV or horseback rides through the saguaro cactus-lined arroyo pit trails may come to mind—but camels? Yes, you read that right. One of the destination’s most delightfully unexpected excursions involves mounting a gentle camel for a slow ride through the Baja California Sur outback. And it’s just as fun as it sounds.

The camel ride tours offered by various outfitters across the Cabo San Lucas area, including Cabo Adventures and Cactus Tours, combine scenic beauty with an animal encounter you wouldn’t expect to find in the Western hemisphere. Equipped with traditional saddles and led by expert handlers, these trained camels take you on a leisurely trek along desert trails and breezy oceanfront paths. Though not native to this continent, camels are perfectly suited to the local terrain. Fused third and fourth toes united by thick, fleshy pads make them surefooted as they travel across the sands. Their graceful gait offers a change of pace from Los Cabos’ usual thrill rides, a peaceful, rhythmic ride with expansive views that can accommodate riders of all ages and levels of experience. You also have plenty of opportunities to take share-worthy photos.

Beyond the ride itself, these excursions include a pre-outing moment to interact with the dromedaries, giving you a chance to learn about their species as a whole and perhaps even bond with your partner for the day on a more personal level. The handlers share their names and some insight about each individual’s personality quirks. Some tours end with a beachside tequila tasting or a traditional Mexican lunch under the shade of a palapa—an added treat after a day in the sun.

But, how did camels end up in Los Cabos, you may ask. Sure, camels are not native to the Baja California peninsula, but they’ve been in the region long enough to become beloved residents. The first camels brought to the US in the 19th century were part of an Army experiment known as the Camel Corps. The idea was to use camels as pack animals in arid environments like the American Southwest. The repatriated animals proved to be hardy and well-suited to their new home, but the Civil War took resources—and focus—in another direction. When the Army declined to adopt them for military use, most of the camels that were stationed in Texas were turned loose to graze after that state seceded from the Union. But these weren’t the only camels in the Lone-Star State. Private businesses anticipating a robust market out West had also imported hundreds more through Mobile, Galveston, and San Francisco. Many of these camels were sold at auction, but some wandered away, making it all the way to Mexico.

The camels that currently live in Los Cabos are descended from those that wandered. They are now well cared for, lovingly trained, and part of educational and conservation-focused programs that prioritize animal welfare. Many were born in captivity and raised by skilled handlers who know how to keep them healthy, happy, and comfortable in their desert surroundings.

It’s a fascinating bit of history that makes camel excursions great for families, couples, and anyone who wants to do something interesting and a little offbeat during their stay in Los Cabos. The rides are mellow, and no experience is required. In fact, most tours are suitable for kids and adults of varying abilities. It’s a fun way to explore the natural landscape while learning something new and enjoying the company of a truly unique animal.
